Mixture of old and new

The capital of Jordan, Amman is a mixture of old and new with over four million inhabitants. The earliest recorded settlement in the area was around 7000 BC and since then the city has been abandoned, destroyed and rebuilt many times by various rulers. The city became the capital in 1921 taking over from As Salt.

You will hear references to Amman’s circles, I initially thought this referred to the layout of the city…circular roads or areas expanding outwards but no….it refers to circles or islands along one road starting with the 1st circle in Jabal Amman which is officially downtown or the city centre and home to Rainbow Street again worth a visit especially the far end which has more unusual shops plus coffee shops.

A visit to downtown is recommended, usually included on all Amman City Tours, to visit the souqs, pick up souvenirs or buy a traditional Jordanian dress, there are lots of shops selling these. You will also find a number of modern shopping malls with international brand shops and lots of swanky ‘sweet’ pastry shops although my favourite is a small shop in the downtown area, freshly made and served hot, wonderful with a scoop of Arabic ice cream!

There is a good selection of restaurants serving local and international cuisine plus a number of rooftop bars for a bit of nightlife. You will find western food outlets in the malls and some of the main shopping areas of the city.

For sightseeing you have to visit The Citadel and Roman Amphitheatre. There are also a number of museums but I would recommend the Jordan Museum which is modern and well laid out.

The only downside of Amman is the traffic but it does give you a chance to people watch!
